About Blackleaf

Blackleaf is a dispensary-built messaging platform designed for regulated retail. Born inside real cannabis stores, we focus on compliant communication, retention, and tools that actually work in day-to-day operations.

Blackleaf was built inside real dispensaries, not a boardroom.

We started in 2019 inside the ShowGrow retail operation with a simple goal: build tools that actually worked for multi-location cannabis stores. At the time, most retail technology looked good in demos but broke down on the sales floor.

Texting, rewards, and customer communication were especially painful. Either the tools were too rigid, too expensive, or constantly running into compliance and deliverability issues.

Built From the Retail Side

Before Blackleaf was a platform, it was an internal system.

We built our first texting and rewards tools to support ShowGrow’s own dispensaries. Those tools had to survive real conditions:

  • Busy checkout lines
  • Carrier filtering
  • Changing regulations
  • Staff turnover
  • Customers who expected speed and clarity

If something didn’t work in the store, it didn’t ship.

How Blackleaf Grew

In 2019, other dispensaries began asking to use the same texting platform we were running internally.

We opened it up quietly. No big launch. No aggressive sales push.

Blackleaf spread the same way many good dispensaries do: by word of mouth.

Operators shared it with other operators because it worked, because it respected compliance, and because it didn’t force them into long contracts or risky shortcuts.

Founded by a Dispensary Operator

Blackleaf was founded by James Gude, a software developer who began working with ShowGrow in 2017.

Before cannabis, James spent over a decade working in telecom and six years in the advertising industry, building large-scale communication systems and working with major advertising firms. That background shaped a deep understanding of how carriers evaluate messaging behavior, how deliverability is enforced at scale, and why many marketing platforms break down in regulated environments.

Today, James is both the founder of Blackleaf and the owner or co-owner of multiple dispensaries. That perspective matters.

Blackleaf decisions are made by someone who:

  • Feels the cost of every text message
  • Deals with carrier rules firsthand
  • Understands how retail staff actually use software
  • Has to make these tools work inside real stores

Our Philosophy

We believe dispensary technology should support operations, not complicate them.

Text messaging is not just marketing. It is infrastructure. It affects retention, support, reputation, and revenue.

That’s why Blackleaf focuses on:

  • Compliant, carrier-approved messaging
  • Clear opt-in and consent workflows
  • Age-gated communication
  • Visibility into delivery, failures, and opt-outs
  • Messaging that reinforces value instead of relying on constant discounts

We build for long-term deliverability, not short-term hacks.

Rooted in Retail, Built to Scale

Being rooted in retail gives us a clear view of what works and what doesn’t.

We’ve seen:

  • POS-locked systems that trap customer data
  • SaaS contracts that become impossible to exit
  • Messaging platforms that fail quietly over time

Blackleaf is designed to avoid those traps.

We keep pricing transparent. We avoid long-term contracts. We design systems that can evolve as regulations, carriers, and customer behavior change.

Why Dispensaries Choose Blackleaf

Dispensaries choose Blackleaf because it feels familiar.

It was built by people who understand:

  • The pressure of the sales floor
  • The importance of compliance
  • The reality of margins
  • The need for tools that just work

Blackleaf exists to help dispensaries communicate responsibly, retain customers consistently, and build systems they can rely on long after trends change.
